Introduction to Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships are nationally recognised work based learning qualifications which enable you to learn whilst working with or for an employer. Apprenticeships are comprised of a number of learning outcomes;
| Learning outcomes | Description |
|---|---|
| NVQ | Designed to help assess your competence in a specific job. |
| Key skills | Predominantly in Numeracy and Communication key skills are used to demonstrate to employers that learners you the necessary skills for the business platform. |
| Technical certificates | Give you the knowledge and understanding of your job role (some Apprenticeships don't have a Technical Certificate associated with them). |
| Employment responsibilities and rights | ERR booklet ensures you have an understanding of your rights in the workplace and is sometimes covered in the Technical Certificate |
| Additional Outcomes/Requirements | Some apprenticeships have additional requirements such as extra Units from another relevant NVQ or a First Aid qualification which is needed in Childcare |
There are two levels of Apprenticeship, the Apprenticeship and the Advanced Apprenticeship which take between 1 and 2 years to complete.

Level 3 Apprenticeships (AMA)
Funded Training
FNTC may be able to obtain funding from the learning and skills council so that your training is free.
The criteria required:
- You are 16 to 25 years old
- You are a UK resident with a valid national insurance number
- You do not already hold a degree or HND qualification.
- You want to study a level 2 or 3 award.
If you are not employed you may also be entitled to a training and travel allowance or the Education Maintenance Allowance (from April 2006).

A1 Assessor Award - OCR Level 3 Award in Assessing Candidates Using a Range of Methods
Who is it for?
Candidates with experience/qualifications in occupational areas who wish to become Vocational qualification assessors.
What entry qualifications do you need?
Experience in the occupational area chosen.
What you must achieve?
To achieve this award candidates must complete Unit A1 form the Learning and Development National Occupational Standards, Assessing Candidates Using a Range of Methods. This unit covers:
- A1.1 Develop plans for assessing competence with candidates
- A1.2 Judge evidence against criteria to make assessment decisions
- A1.3 Provide feedback and support to candidates on assessment decisions
- A1.4 Contribute to internal quality assurance process
Delivery Method
This is a practical award which must be completed whilst working with real students. The underpinning knowledge can be delivered on either a one to one basis or in a group.

Paediatric First Aid Certificate
General Information
The Paediatric First Aid Course is an approved course meeting all OFSTED requirements for anyone who works in the childcare sector.
Delegates will cover the following topics during the course:
- Aims and Principles of first aid
- Incident management/emergency planning
- Treatment of unconsciousness
- Resuscitation of infants and children
- Airway and breathing problems
- Wounds and bleeding
- Burns and poisons
- Other serious injuries
- Other serious medical conditions
- Prevention of cross infection
Who is this course for?
This course is suitable for practitioners who work in a childcare environment including nurseries and preschools.
Duration
It is a 12 hour course which is taught over 2 days.

CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Child Care and Education (CCE)
Who is it for?
- Key Stage 4 pupils in schools (14+) or colleges
- 16-18 year olds in FE colleges or with Training Providers
- Mature candidates in special circumstances
What entry qualifications do you need?
There are no formal entry qualifications.
What will you learn?
You will learn about children at different stages in their growth and development. You will also learn how to care for and educate children and how to work with parents, carers and other professionals.
What age range of children is the award about?
Birth to 7 years 11 months.
How will you be assessed?
One assignment for each unit and a multiple choice question paper covering the core units.
Will there be practical placements during the course?
Yes. CACHE recommends 65 days in placement.
How many teaching hours?
1 year full time or some Study Centres offer it as a part time course over a longer period of time.
What other qualifications can you do when you finish this award?
CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Child Care and Education (DCE)
CACHE NVQ Level 3 in Children's Care, Learning and Development (CCLD-L3)
(you must be supervising other members of staff, or working on your own, before undertaking this qualification).
What jobs can you apply for?
Nursery assistant, pre-school assistant etc.

5 GCSE grades A*-C
Fees
FNTC has access to government funding through the learning and skills council dependent on the time of the year. You need to be 16 to 25 years old to qualify for government funded training. Please apply early to avoid disappointment.
