Interview with our youngest Digital Marketing Apprentice
Recently we caught up with our youngest Digital Marketing Academy member Will, who has been on his Apprenticeship for almost one year now. At the young age of 16, Will chose not to follow the path that the majority of his friends and fellow school leavers were taking after completing his GCSE’s. Instead Will researched Apprenticeships for school leavers and opted for an earning and learning programme here at FNTC.
So we thought doing a video interview would give a lot of others in a similar position to Will at this time last year, a great insight into the benefits of doing an apprenticeship rather than following the ‘usual’ educational route that most teens choose to take. Apprenticeships for school leavers are an excellent way to continue learning new skills in a discipline that you are interested in, all whilst earning a wage.
If you enjoy this written form of the interview with Will, then please do take a few minutes to check out our video version here:
‘Hi Will, thank you for agreeing to do this interview with us. Please can you just introduce yourself and say a little bit about when you started the Digital Marketing apprenticeship with FNTC?
‘Hi, so my name is Will Browne, I am 16 years old and I am doing a Digital Marketing Apprenticeship with FNTC. I joined here straight after finishing my GCSE’s and leaving school in July 2018.’
‘Can you give us some of your thoughts prior to starting your course? Did you have any nerves with this being your first job?’
‘I think initially when I joined I was quite nervous about coming to my first workplace as I had become completely used to being in the secondary school environment for the last 5 years, so I was definitely worried that I may not fit in or I might make mistakes in my role’
‘My other worry was the most of my friends were going off to college’s or sixth form to continue their education the more traditional route, and I was the only person going off to do an apprenticeship instead, so I wasn’t completely sure if it was the right choice for me or not.’
‘But I have been here for almost a whole year now, and I am absolutely loving my role as a Digital Marketer. I have been given the chance to work on a whole range of different projects, including SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) for the company website, having control over the companies’ twitter page and using my creative side to design graphics for our campaigns, which I really enjoy doing.’
‘That’s great to hear. What have been the greatest benefits for you personally taking the apprenticeship route rather than the traditional education path?’
‘Through being in a real work environment and doing things like making calls to our clients and presenting reports from our social media analytics, I have built up so much confidence in myself and this will help me with my next job when I gain my qualification – I think this has been the biggest benefit to working and learning at the same time.’
‘So what would you say to someone in school who was perhaps looking at doing an apprenticeship?’
‘I would highly recommend apprenticeships for school leavers, or to anyone who is just looking for a change. I know with me personally I learn far better in a practical workplace environment and if you feel you do too, it’s a great step to take.’
‘Thank you for your time, Will.’
Here at FNTC we absolutely love seeing the personal development of our young learners and think what they learn throughout their time doing an apprenticeship is invaluable knowledge that they will take with them wherever the next step in their career may be.
