Today we sat down with one of FNTC’s alumni, Carmen Kempster.
Carmen had completed a Pre-Apprenticeship program with us - These are fantastic programmes to equip 16-18 year olds with the skills and experience they need to confidently take their next steps into a rewarding career. She then progressed onto a Business Admin Apprenticeship course, and has since completed that. She is now progressing even further in her career. This is absolutely fantastic to hear! So take a seat, and check out the interview below.
How did you hear about FNTC and its Pre-Apprenticeship programme?
So I started off with a careers advisor with the council so she would come and see me during the week, and she suggested FNTC as it would be a fantastic career opportunity for me as a young mum, It would also help me with my maths and English skills too.
What made you enrol onto the Pre-Apprenticeship programme?
I enrolled on the Pre-Apprenticeship program with FNTC to help me with my CV, improve my skills in a working environment and try to look at all the options in my area.
What did you feel the biggest benefit of our Pre-Apprenticeship was?
I feel like it gave me a great place to start from. From there I was able to progress onto my work experience, and the administration and IT skills I learnt from that point were extremely valuable. From that I was able to secure a place doing a Business Administration Apprenticeship, supported by FNTC
How did you feel the Apprenticeship you progressed onto prepared you for employment?
Definitely! I started off at Trojan mailing initially working on a lot of print, but eventually I was given far more admin roles. During my apprenticeship I learned so many crucial skills on excel, diary systems, greeting customers and just so much about that company. The apprenticeship allowed me to progress further onto being a multi-tasker, I am very capable with helping others out now. It has just allowed me to really grow in the workplace.
Could you give us a little update regarding your apprenticeship and your plan for the future?
So I have finished my apprenticeship now, and I am currently working at Trojan mailing. Sadly, I will be leaving soon to go into a lettings agency. Because of my qualifications in Business admin, I am able to go straight into a Team Leader role, and if this is not possible, a business administration role. It will be great to see the admin side of another company to gain more experience, but I am sad to be leaving Trojan mailing.
What did you enjoy the most about the apprenticeship?
I enjoyed the place I worked so much. Not only that but coursework was made so much easier by smart assessor and regular visits from my assessor each month. That was extremely helpful and very reassuring, and gave me the confidence to keep going. The employer I worked with was so knowledgeable about business administration so this allowed me to get a really good look into that world. Not only all that, it was also a good laugh!
Would you recommend the Pre-Apprenticeship programme and Apprenticeship to others? If so, why?
Certainly yes! The Pre-Apprenticeship allowed me to work on my employability skills, my English and maths and massively improve my CV. This prepared me for a working environment so I progressed onto an apprenticeship. The apprenticeship gave me so much experience and a fantastic qualification, and I would never have been considered for a Team Leader role before that. I personally did not finish college as I found balancing my personal life and study to be very hard, but FNTC gave me enough support to be able to complete my apprenticeship, and now I’m progressing massively.
